General
information on Spanish Railways Spain is currently one of the larger railroading countries in Europe. Investments into railroads during the current economic revival period have been enormous and the country currently has a relatively well working networks of all types of trains. Earlier isolation caused the country to be left behind with its 1668 mm gauge network. However this also led to development of big an dpowerful trains unseen in most other parts in Europe for decades. Currently a number of newer routes are being built to standard 1435 mm (4' 8,5") gauge and online gauge changers are commonplace: you just run the train trought the gauge changing machine to change from one network to another! The use of 1435 mm gauge has greatly helped Spain to integrate with the other European railnetworks, especially those of France and Germany. For the future the new trains are designed so that the change to 1435 "standard gauge" is possible later. |

Speed Trains and Networks of Spain For Super High Speed Renfe (Spanish Railways) has AVE service (Auto Velocidad Espanol). AVE Velaro, TGV and Talgo trains are commonplace in Spain. With building of mostly 1435 mm super high speed lines since 1990's the country is soon covered with means to travel fast from one end to another. And even better, the next phase will connect Spanish super fast networks with those of the neighboring countries France and Portugal bringing the Europeans together.
