![]() Welcome
to the Estonian C36-7i and C30-7i page! These locomotives were
acquired
from the U.S. in 2003 to the Estonian operator Eesti Raudtee (back then
in the
American ownership) to help in the motive power shortage. The sellers
were class 1 railroads of the U.S., the Union Pacific and the NS/CSX
(ex. Conrail units). While Estonian railroad infra
under Soviets was
used to by heavy locomotives, these units anyhow proved to be
problematic at
first and were accused of destroying the infrastructure. Today there is
no
talking about problems on rails. Also the Estonian government has
bought back the Eesti Raudtee.
Before the C36-7i and C30-7i diesels were shipped to Estonia, the bogies were converted from normal width 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1/2 in) to 1520 mm (5ft) gauge (the 'Russian') gauge and the electrical systems on the engines were rebuilt, thus the marking 7i. They also got a new "Wisconsin Central" type paint as the owner for both companies at the time was Ed Burkhart. Anywhere you go today in Estonia, if you spend a few moments by the trackside, you will probably see some of these intresresting locomomotives at work or parked somewhere near the largest stations.

from the picture, the traffic is heavy on this section of the tracks.
