  4rail.net - Rolling Stock Reference - C36-7i and C30-7i in Estonia

Welcome to the Estonian C36-7i and C30-7i page! These locomotives were acquired from the U.S. in 2003 to the Estonian operator Eesti Raudtee (back then in the American ownership) to help in the motive power shortage. The sellers were class 1 railroads of the U.S., the Union Pacific and the NS/CSX (ex. Conrail units). While Estonian railroad infra under Soviets was used to by heavy locomotives, these units anyhow proved to be problematic at first and were accused of destroying the infrastructure. Today there is no talking about problems on rails. Also the Estonian government has bought back the Eesti Raudtee.

The C36-7i and C30-7i models can be seen in a numerous different jobs from heavy freight train operations to local switching. The consiousness of the fuel consumption is very good, since the shunting crews often seem to turn the engine instantly off after they finish their work.

 Eesti Raudtee C36-7i / C30-7i Story
You are probably thinking about why the old locomotives instead of brand new with much enhanced features:

  • money counts: used equipment was ok for a few years operations during the time of transition from the S.U. control to the independent Estonia within the European Union. For the new equipment the payback period would be maybe 20 years, for used only 3 - 5 years.
  • The Estonian overhead wires are in many places hanged really low, so low that any of the newer General Electric models would hit the wires! Actually the wires would come in the windows of models like C44-9W.

Before the C36-7i and C30-7i diesels were shipped to Estonia, the bogies were converted from normal width 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1/2 in) to 1520 mm (5ft) gauge (the 'Russian') gauge and the electrical systems on the engines were rebuilt, thus the marking 7i. They also got a new "Wisconsin Central" type paint as the owner for both companies at the time was Ed Burkhart.

Anywhere you go today in Estonia, if you spend a few moments by the trackside, you will probably see some of these intresresting locomomotives at work or parked somewhere near the largest stations.

All of this area, cramped within the city is now empty of the traffic, waiting for the next use probably as a future building site. With decades of neglecting oil train spills, the area is probably not suitable for housing.
