![]() The 2TE116 was probably the most successful locomotive made in Russia during the late Soviet period. While the C44 rules in the Wset, the 2Te116 was equivalent for the East. Although years have passed, you will still find 2Te116 locomotives on a number of countries on the 1520 mm (5 ft) gauge area. Huge double diesels are an impressive sight and hard to miss anywhere where they are used. The configurations of the unit are Te116, 2Te116 and 3Te116, although what you will find is 99% the 2Te116 variant. Some units are rebuilt (most with M letter at the end of the type plate), but curiously in a worse shape than their original condition sisters. ![]() Picture: Transoil 2Te116, number 696 is a typical specimen of the type, here seen near Tallinn waiting for new assignments. This unit was built in 1981 in Russia. To the top of the page

Exporting wood has been in deep decline due to the punishment tariffs of Russia for raw materials and the Russian forestry industry has been reported a 70% decline from 2008 to 2009! Even then some wood is transported across the border. Picture by John McKey 2009. RzD 2Te116 number 1566 ![]() Picture: Another one of the numerous 2Te116s of the mighty Russian RzD. This unit is pulling pulpwood cars around 10 miles in the Finnish soil in Imatra. The cars will be left there, sorted out by Finnish VR-Yhtyma and pulled to one of the numerous paper mills in the area. Picture by Ilkka Siissalo 2008. 2Te116 number 1667 ![]() Picture: A truly unusal finding, the Sillamäe Sadam (Estonia) 2Te116 number 1667 seems totally out of place for such a small sea port. It is possible this unit is currently back in another companies colors as the need for such a high horse power solution seems unlikely for the use. Picture by Ilkka Siissalo 2007. 2Te116 number 1678 ![]() Picture: A Transoil 2Te116 number 1678 is one of the commonly seen locomotives transporting mainly oil from Russia to Estonian port of Muuga (near Tallinn). Notice the additional structures above the cab (like air condintioning) well visible from this angle. Picture by Ilkka Siissalo 2008. Spacecom 2Te116 number 1698 ![]() Picture: A Spacecom 2te116 number 1698 in Estonia.
