General
information on French
Railways France is one of the three great railroading nations in Europe (the other being Germany and Russia). The volumes of rail transportation are huge, so you can find numerous rolling stock types in France. On one subject the French are number one over all other European nations: the super high speed railroading! There is no match to over 500 TGV units mainly trafficing in France and the high speed networks of the country exceed 2000 kilometers and are expanding further. Speeds of up to 340 km/h have been reported on everyday traffic. All these make the country an important player in high speed rairoading arena. TGV & AGV Super High Speed Page

Organizating the French Railroading France has been very nationalistic in railroading. Still most of the rolling stock and systems. However, with European Union opening the competition everything is changing, however slowly. On the freight side there are already several operators and more entering the arena. The new competitors have been extremely successful in winning the tranportation and creating new rail transport. With passenger traffic the SNCF still has almost practical monopoly along with the regions operators. DB runs now to Paris from Koln Germany and Trenitalia is going to start connections between Italy and Paris. French
