4rail.net - Finnish Rolling Stock Classes

We classify some of the most common Finnish Rolling Stock starting from the EMU's.

  EMU's:  Sm1Sm2,  Sm3 (Pendolino),  Sm4Sm5 (FLIRT),
  DMU's
  Diesel Locomotives

 Finnish EMUs

Manufacturer and type: Valmet Strömberg  Sm1
Class: Sm1         Finnish Metropolitan area 1960s and 70s locally built commuter EMU. These trains are used mainly for the Helsinki Metropolitan area commuter traffic where they run mostly in multiple unit consists. Age is starting to show with rust coming through the paint on many units and stairs when climbing aboard the train are not any more from this day. On of the ideas is to replace the class Sm1 with the Sm5 once they come available. However, the need for more passenger capacity might postpone the withdrawal.

Manufacturer and type: Valmet Strömberg  Sm2
Class: Sm2
Finnish Metropolitan area 1980s locally built commuter EMU. Like the very similar class Sm1, the Sm2 is most often used on the Helsinki Metropolitan and surrounding cities traffic although many can be found on the longer distance commuter traffic as well. Of aluminum construction and using aircushioned bogies, the Sm2s are show aging as well. Alhough being obsolete cosntruction (steps, poor bogies, electric tehnology, 120 km/h top speed, ...), many units are going through a rebuilding program, that should help to extend their service life with another 10-20 years.

Manufacturer and type: Alstom / Fiat Ferroviaria  Pendolino
Class: Sm3
Finnish high speed InterCity EMU, marketed as "Pendolino S220". The class Sm3 is an interesting Italian built Pendolino train. With the top speed of 220 km/h and tilting capability, these units are currently responsible for Finnish 'high speed' and high service & comfort level traffic. Apart from the constant coupler problems the 18 6 car units have been a great success, even in the snow and cold weather in Finland.

Manufacturer and type: Bombardier / Fiat Ferroviaria / CAF
Class: Sm4
A new breed for Finnish Metropolitan area and regional commuter EMU. To add capacity to around Helsinki area 2 batches of Sm4 trains were ordered. With their partly low floor and comfortable interior design they have been a great success in the commuter traffic around Helsinki area and beyond. These trains ride well even at their top speed of 160 km/h and regenerative braking makes energy conservation possible.

Manufacturer and type: Stadler FLIRT EMU
Class: Sm5
Finnish Metropolitan area will receive Class Sm5 Flirt trains starting 2009. The class Sm5 will again add some capacity to commuter traffic around Helsinki area. The first unit has been in winter tests in Riovaniemi, the north of Finland, during January 2009. The forst trains will probably start their traffic at the ned of 2009 every unit replacing 2 older Sm1 units (capacity allowing the obsolete Sm1 units retirement). The other 30 units will start streaming in from 2010 and if the class is technically successful there is a great chance that more will be ordered later.

Karelia trains, the joint venture of the Russian RZD and Finnish VR-Yhtyma, will receive 4 Pendolino units for semi high speed traffic between St Petersburg Russian and helsinki Finland. Currently the traffic is taken care with all kinds of technically obsolete rolling stock from Russia and Finland. The new trains will be marketed under Allegro name.
