![]() European Union has had a strong effect on the shape of the Finnish Railways structure in the past 10 years. Earlier most of the things happened arount the state owned railroad company, now things are slowly starting to diverge. National
and international operators Tallinn surroundings operators MOW operators Other National and International Operators Rolling stock operators within Estonian territory. Edelraudtee The Estonian medium distance passenger railroad operator. Operates a number of Soviet built DR1 DMU's. In 2008 Edelraudtee is said to be making loss due to more and more repairs needed to it's aging fleet. Eesti Raudtee The largest single Estonian freight operator, the Eesti Raudtee ("Estonian Railways") and the railroad infrastructure were sold after the country regained it's independence to Ed Burhart's railroad empire. As a result restructuring of all the operations was started immediately and Eesti Rautee became one of the most efficient railroad companies in the ex. Est Europe. Besides restructuring operations, there were numerous GE C30-7i/C36-7i locomotives imported from the U.S. to replace the obsolete Russian built locomotives used till then. In 2007 Eesti Raudtee was sold back to State of Estonia to cope with the EU regulations, that the state should own the infrastructure and allow anyone to operate on it. At the end the year 2007 the competition actually was vicious for a while, but in 2008 it would appeat that the ER has regained much of the declining freight business. Currently some of the Eesti Raudtees C30/C36's and some Tzech built locomotives are actually stored awaiting for new assignments elsewhere. Go Rail Go Rail operates the long distance passenger services (Tallinn - Moscow) in Estonia. RZD The Russian Railways has some locomotives in Estonia hauling import/export goods or stored in Narva waiting for assignments. Transoil Large Russian private operator running mainly trains from Russia to Estonian ports. Spacecom Large Russian private operator running mainly trains from Russia to Estonian ports. Known for it's blue monster 2TE116 locomotives. To the top of the page
Tallinn Surroundings operators Rolling stock operators within Tallinn area Elektriraudtee Elektriraudtee operates the Tallinn surroundings old electric railways, which stretch in the east to Kehra. For effective commuter railway networks a lot of work would be needed both on the rolling stock and the infrastructure. In addition, all of the national operators operate around tallinn as well. MOW and other operators Since railroads in European Union are open for competition, the maintenance of infrastructure business has proved to be a good place to start for some new companies in Estonia. GO Track appears to be the maintenance force of much the Estonian railnetwork in the northern part of the country. VR Rata VR Rata (of Finland, north of Estonia) has lately won several competitons for maintenance and upgrading of the track in Estonia and Sweden. We will add later pictures from our trip in 2008 and some Finnish originating rolling stock used daily in Estonia. Museums etc. Ww will add this section later. To the top of the page
