  4rail.net - France - Gare du Nord 2004 and 2008

This page is devoted to Paris Gare du Nord, the station where most international trains depart and arrive. Gare du Nord has direct links to Great Britain (Eurostar), Belgium (Thalys) and Netherlands (Thalys) as well as to Germany (ICE3 and TGV-POS). Every hour several super high speed trains are going one way or another.

Let' see some pictures! Click the picture to see the larger version of it.

Paris Gare du Nord in 2003...

Above the Thalys PBKA number unit 4307 is bathing in the hot afternoon sunlight under the arches of Gare du Nord. Nothing has changed in this during the last 5 years. The Thalyses link France to Belgium and Netherlands with super high speed service of 300 kph! Picture by John McKey 2003.

Another view to the sleek TGV "newer generation" face of the Thalys unit number 4307 at Paris Gare du Nord. Picture by John McKey 2003.

Here you see the both generations of the TGV trains in the attractive red and gray Thalys livery. While most of the newer generation TGV's for the SNCF are double decked, no congestion north of Paris has so far allowed the use of single story TGV coaches. Picture by John McKey 2003. Again, no external changes in this for 5 years. The insides of the trains have been refurbished.

Gare du Nord is also the French side terminal for the Eurostar units. Unlike connections with the other EU (Shengen) nations, the crowded UK departures and arrivals are behind the glass walls much like at the airports today. Picture by Sanna Siissalo 2008. Again, no changes in this for 5 years. The author has another picture, exactly like this that was taken several years ago.

Recent Changes for 2008 - 2009

Here a pair of TGV-POS'es are seen at the Gare du Nord. The new generation asynchronous motor TGV-POS units were ordered for the TGV-EST high speed track towards Germany. The TGV-POS number 4407 is one of the first units built for the new track East of Paris. As an evolution model, these train achieve easily their maximum speed of 320 kph. The locomotives at the both ends are new, but the coaching is taken from the TGV Reseau units. The Reseau coaches have been replaced with the new double decked ones for use on more congested 300 kph lines. Picture by Sanna Siissalo 2008.

An ICE3 unit beside the older generation TGV-Reseau unit 552. The ICE3's are a sign of opening international traffic, even to the national territory of France. While ICE3's of Deutsche Bahn have started their traffic to France, the brand new TGV-POS units take their visits daily to the German territory in exchange. The older TGV-Reseau unit 552 is most likely here after serving the traffic in the northern France. Picture by Sanna Siissalo 2008.

Brand new TGV-POS's pose in Paris Gare du Nord for the camera. Almost brand new...the locomotives are new, while the coaches are from the TGV-Reséau sets. Single story trains of 320 km/h serve well the limited numbers of passengers between France and Germany. once the volumes pick up, it's guaranteed that the double decked coaches will be swapped to these units. A Thalys PBKA number 4243 boarding in Paris-GNO. As 40% more passengers are expected to travel the Thalyses within next 3 years, seventh daily return trip between Paris and Amsterdam will be added beginning March 2008. Picture by Sanna Siissalo 2008.
