| New &
updated subjects Welcome to the home of the 4rail.net! The 4rail.net is growing to become one of the large railroad reference pages on the net. Our aim is to provide hobbyists and professionals alike with a wealth of accurate and detailed information. As you may realise, the goal is not easily achieved, and some patience is needed on the way. However, even today we believe you may find some invaluabel information not found anywhere else, plus a lot of information in the form that it is easy to use. December 29th 2007 The first 4 months of development work have passed quite smoothly. Actually our development team, Juha/John, Hannu, Ilkka and Stanislav are quite surprised on the readers and contacts made from around the world. Quite obviously 4rail.net has found it's place in the net. We thank YOU, our reader, for that! But since the development work is continuous, there will be continuous improvements made within the next half a year. Usability has been the main concern over the starting period. In order to be able to provide enough material online some of the usability issues had to be overlooked. Now it's time to go back to those and do some brushing up of the pages at the same time. And in the meantime we will try to provide more information on the most popular categories and subjects we feel might be interesting to most of our readers. We acquired an ISSN number, which is ISSN 1797-1764 for the 4rail.net publication. The sole purpose of this is to be able to archive material better, and we wish to send material for the Finnish National Archives yearly (the whole site) to be preserved for the use of the future generations. You may have wondered, why we still use the static webpages instead of the dynamic ones. Well, the static pages can be viewed in hundred years just as well as they can be viewed today. This could not be said about the dynamic pages could it? One of the main tasks ahead is to provide easy communications method between the readers and the 4rail.net development team. There are several smaller changes coming to make that easier. We wish to hear from YOU, so don't hesitate to contact us whether it's good or bad news, questions, information you wish to read, or something else! We always welcome any material contributions around the world, so if you could, please provide us with stories, pictures and other material around the world. If necessary, we are currently able to translate any text to English from Swedish, Danish, Norvegian, Finnish, French, German, Flamish, Swiss dialects, Estonian, ... Happy New Year 2008! Best Regards to You on the behalf of the whole development team John McKey [mackee] / Juha Riihimäki* 29.12.2007 * This would be extremely difficult to pronounce in English language, so I usually use my English alias name John McKey. September 9th 2007 A well known professional reporter and photographer Stanislav Voronin is to join the 4rail.net development team. Stanislav has written many articles on Finnish railroading and can provide invaluable background information on the Russian rairoading as well. Welcome abord Stas! August 3rd 2007 Welcome to the home of the 4rail.net. The 4rail.net is growing to become one of the large railroad reference pages on the net. Our aim is to provide hobbyists and professionals alike with a wealth of accurate and detailed information. As you may realise, the goal is not easily achieved, and some patience is needed on the way. Technically we will use both traditional html-pages and dynamic web-publishing tools, both where they are best: The traditional html pages (believe or not) are still superior to the webpublishing systems, when the questions of easy navigation & search, longevity etc. arise. Dynamic pages on the other hand are superior in their ability to keep the timing automatically and share the experience. Our reationship with the Alpine Railways Enthusiasts is close. Actually most of us belong to that group, so you will obviously find a multitude on mountain railroading pictures and stories on these pages too...given some time. There are Finnish and German versions of some of the material too. Those can be found at "Alppirata-site". Welcome to the Great World of Railroad Reference! Let the journey begin! 3.8.2007 in Helsinki, Finland John Mc Key & Ilkka Siissalo |
