Cargo Rc1
number 1018 -> Train control
systems: Sweden The Green Cargo painted Rc2 number 1087 was switching freight cars, Td and T44 locomotives at Tomteboda in Stockholm. Tomteboda (home for elfs in English) has a huge sorting center for the Swedish postal services plus a lively rail yard. The yard can be seen easily from all sides with the Rc-locomotives and remote controlled T44s doing switching. Picture by Hannu Peltola 2009. Technical details for RC2 Type: Rc2 Usage: multipurpose electric locomotive Builder: Asea AB Production dates: 1969 - 1975 Numbers built: 100, road numbers 1028 - 1133, ~70 left, 23 locomotives were built to Rc3 series in 1990s Users: Green Cargo of SJ Seen: Sweden, more of the type were also sold from Asea to Austria as class 1043. Energy Source: electricity, 15kV 16,66 Hz AC Engine: ASEA LJH 108 Power output: 3600 kW (4x900kw) (4895 Hp) Transmission: Tractive Effort: 275 kN (starting power) Braking effort on traction motors (dynamic braking): ? Multiple unit operations: up to 3 Rc units Wheel arrangement: Bo'Bo' Wheel diameter: 1300 mm (as new) Maximum operational speed where possible: 135 km/h (84 mph) (160 km/h (100 mph) for the Rc3 built units) Length: 15,5 m Weight: 77 metric tons (,000 lb) SJ Rc3 Interestingly the class Rc3 locomotives are also used for switching work, even with their very limited visibility. Here the Rc3 number 1027 is switching at Solna passenger coaches service facilities. Picture by John McKey 2009. SJ Rc4 SJ Rc6 ![]() Picture: Rc6 at switching work under Stockholms Central railway station. Rc locomotives were once synonymous for Swedish railroading pulling almost all passenger trains. Technical details for RC6 Type: Rc6 Usage: multipurpose electric locomotive Builder: Asea AB Production dates: 1982 - 1986 (for Rc5s converted to Rc6 in 1992 -1995), 1985 - 1988 for Rc6 Numbers built: 60 + 40, road numbers 1323 - 1882, 1383 - 1422 (original Rc6s) Users: SJ, SSRT (Swedish State Railways Trains (train owner)) Seen: Sweden and Norway Energy Source: electricity, 15kV 16,66 Hz AC Engine: ASEA LJM 450 Power output: 3600 kW (4x900kw) (4895 Hp) Transmission: Tractive Effort: 250 kN (starting power) Braking effort on traction motors (dynamic braking): ? Wheel arrangement: Bo'Bo' Wheel diameter: 1300 mm Maximum operational speed where possible: 160 km/h (100 mph), 2 of the Rc6s were temporarily equipped for operations for 180 km/h but later returned to Rc6 series. SJ Rd2 The first Rd locomotives will be built using the Rc2 chassis, similar to picture above, and the bogies. We have learnt that many Rc2's are "built by hand", solution vary from one locomotive to another and the rebuilder Bombardier has had more work modernizing the locos than it had evaluated. Picture above by Hannu Peltola. ![]() A brand new from the refurbishing factory Rd2 number 1069 with a test car near Alvesta Sweden. Below a sister unit Rd2 number 1088 seen between the tank cars, also in Alvesta Sweden. Both pictures by Ilkka Siissalo. SJ Green Cargo Re Swedish Green Cargo (part of the state operator SJ) will receive 16 new Bombardier secaond generation Traxx locomotives. These will be classified as Re, following the standard classification system of SJ, letter e being the next available. Two first locomotives are in the country already and thest have gone smoothly even in the extreme weather of the 2010 winter. The rest are being delivered till summer 2010. The class Re enables Green Cargo to pull trains through to the Central Europe, a great lack in todays motive power. Also, the traxx locomotives allow SJGC to modernize its very much aging fleet. The RTS locomotive in the picture is of similar type to the class Re, the Swedish locomotives will be painted attractive green and black scheme of SJGC. El18 of NSB ![]() Technical details of El18: -> Type: LOK2000 -> Classes: Swiss SBB Re460, Swiss BLS Re465, Norwegian EL18, Finnish Sr2 -> Builder: Originally built by SLM/ABB, most current units by Bombardier -> Usage: Heavy electric road passenger and freight locomotive. -> Production dates: 1991 to 2003 -> Numbers built: 207 -> Gauge: 1435 mm (4' 8.5") or 1524 mm (5 ft) -> Users: Swiss SBB/CFF/FFS and BLS, Norwegian NSB, Finnish VR-Yhtyma, KCRC -> Seen: The above countries plus Sweden. -> Energy Source: Electric according to country specifications - Switzerland and Norway/Sweden: 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz - Finland: 25kV 50 Hz -> Electric system: Adtranz - GTO thyristors and 3 phase AC traction motors.
