| Watching the huge BNSF stack train roll by... | |||
| The
stack trains are a phenomenon in themselves. More and more
trains appear on track every year and the tracks themselves in
many places
seem to be growing from one track to two and in some cases to three now
to meet the demand. Often these monster trains span from one horizon to
another (or at least as far as you can see both ways). The
stack trains are typically pulled with 3-5 newer GE locomotives and
often pushed with a couple more to give the required momentum to keep
them moving fast. Other trains often give room for these monsters
packed with
double decked containers and trailers containing consumer goods. Most
stack trains run on tight schedules; something quite rare for the
railroads in the old days. Many of the BNSF trains don't even stop for
fueling and service in places
like BNSF's major yard Barstow. Below, we'll take a look at one of the combined container and trailer train that we spotted on the way driving from Oakhurst to Sacramento by the road side. Unlike it's main line cousins, this was running at a relative slow speed and halting for a probable crew change in the town nearby, so there was plenty of time to take the pictures. At the end of the page you fill will also later find a video on the BNSF 20000'+ and UP10000'+ stack trains racing out of Barstow! | |||

Two
Stack Trains Race Out of
Barstow, California ![]() See the BNSF and Union Pacific stack trains race out of Barstow! In this video we see BNSF's Q LHALPC1, one of their 10,000'+ trains, departing eastbound out of Barstow, CA, running in a 4x2 configuration. Catching by surprise is UP's KLAG1 which was hiding behind the BNSF train on the approach. The KLAG1 was running in a 2x2 config. The BNSF train was departing off the 30mph Main 4 and is thusly being overtaken by the UP train which sailed through town on the 50mph Main 3. Although where this video was shot, the trains were on mains 2 and 1 respectively.
