 General information on French Railways
France is one of the three great railroading nations in Europe (the other being Germany and Russia). While the volumes of rail transportation are huge, so is the variety of the rolling stock. You can find numerous evolution versions of just about any locomotive, EMU or DMU on French railnetworks.

On one subject the French are number one over all other nations: the super high speed railroading! There is no match to around 500 TGV units mainly trafficing in France and the
high speed networks of the country exceed 2000 kilometers and are expanding further. Speeds of up to 340 km/h have been reported on everyday traffic. All these make the country number one in super high speed arena.

 Organizating the French Railroading
France was for long very nationalistic in railroading. However, with European Union opening the competition everything is changing. On the freight side there are already several operators and more entering the arena. With passenger traffic the SNCF still has practical monopoly along with the regions operators.

 Paris Area Local Traffic
Īle-de-France - the Greater Paris area -  has an interesting traffic patterns, with numerous metro types, some now over 100 years old, some new, many going under ground, others elevated above streets, high speed high capacity RER trains connecting Paris with its suburbs, over ground outside the city center and diving deep into the ground in the center, local trains and super high speed trains the city of more than 10 million people can function relatively well. Some capacity limitations exist especailly with RER lines, but these are being fixed within the next years. There is even the great circle line around Paris in teh drawing boards and some already built. To add to these many Paris old stations add to the railfans excitement.
