Unusual  Picture 5 - A Gigantic Crane of Volgograd!
A gigantic crane on the dam in Volgograd, Russia
Heavy duties demand heavy solutions, this enormous 500 tons crane lifts dam ports on the dam in Volgograd and could easily lift it's generators for repairs or any other task needed. Intersting that the top looks like a house, you bet that in the west there would be a restaurant on boards the device :)

Unusual  Picture 4 - A Railroad Vacuum Cleaner!
Railvacuum cleaner by Saalasti in Sweden
Gerry Putz found this truly railroad sized vacuuming unit on his trip to Sweden. The unit was built by a Finnish engineering company Saalasti in 2004. According to manufacturer the unit is used for  sucking in the ballast for cleaning and dumping back on line after being cleaned. The manufacturer of the vacuuming machinery itselt is Disab of Sweden. The unit can actually perform several tasks by sucking up any material to create a hollow for instance to add a culvert into the track bed and replacing the ballast after the operation is done.

There is also a long discussion on this machines ability to filter iron pellets from the gravel at trainorders.com. Have a look at the discussion!

Unusual  Picture 3 - A Volkswagen to fight snow, Zurich, Switzerland
Swiss snow fighting VW!
TA VW to Fight Snow?
Who says the snow fighting should be dull? And with the Volkswagen came probably even the radio, otherwise only found on the newest locomotives... September is the month to get the snow fighting equipment back in shape. And for 4rail.net it is time to start the half yearly snow fighting gallery :) .

Unusual  Picture 2 - Tram Picup, Riga, Latvia

Tram Pickup?
We all know pickups on rubber wheels, but this is what happens with limited resources and lots of imagination! Stanislav Voronin spotted this wonderful pickup on tram rails while travelling in Riga Latvia.

Unusual  Picture 1 - Robot Locomotive at Work in Zurich, Switzerland

Robots on the Railroads?
This DR-10000 locomotive has eyes and ears for its surroundings while its working remotely controlled in the Basel for Cica company. While remote control is not actually excotic, you hardly find it in this size category!

Below you will more pictures of this loco and soon of others as well.
